Hockey

Hockey has a long standing tradition in Omagh Academy where nine teams train and play on a weekly basis. Staff and pupils dedicate a lot of their own time and commitment during the season which has led to many successes in recent years. Coaches are made up of teaching staff Mrs Dickson, Mr Arbuthnot, Miss Howard and Miss Frazer with some outside help from qualified coaches Sophie Smyth and Laura White. All teams have an extensive fixture list, playing friendly, cup and league matches.

As well as pitch training, senior squads are expected to maintain a high level of fitness and therefore participate in early morning fitness classes in the fitness suite or circuit class, and can also avail of using the fitness suite after school.

Hockey Tours

Hockey tours have been a tradition of Omagh Academy. In recent years we have enjoyed tours to Belgium, Barcelona, Edinburgh. London and Dublin. Regular tours such as these help prepare for cup competitions as well as developing each player’s holistic development.

Pupil success

We have a tradition of our players gaining representative honours at Ulster and Irish level, most notably a past captain Shirley McCay and Schools Cup winner who is the most capped sportswoman in Ireland, World Cup silver medallist and Tokyo Olympic qualifier 2021.

Lauren Armstrong (class of 2020) has captained and represented Ulster and Ireland at U16/ 18/ 19 age sections.

Many of our pupils represent the Western Area in Ulster tournaments throughout each season and are selected for Ulster talent development programmes.
